Rental apartment decorating can be tricky as one is limited on the extent of alterations that they are allowed on the property. Renting (when compared to owning) may sound simple, but it also comes with its headaches, like being stuck with neutral palettes that go against one’s tastes. The same palettes make decorating a rental apartment easier though. Imagine being tied to the previous tenant’s orange ceiling! That would be a nightmare.

Fortunately, I have quite a few rental apartment decorating tips that will help make the apartment feel like a home:
Rental apartment decorating tips that work
Spice things up with a door wreath
This 22 Windsor Silk Spring Door Wreath is one of the best rental partment decorating ideas
Door wreaths are just cute, and proper. No landlord will withhold your deposit for putting on one because it is a temporal accessory. The beautiful part is that you can have a wreath for each holiday or season of the year. This is the easiest of the rental apartment decorating hacks.
Welcome mats and door signs

Signs and mats that read “Welcome” do add warmth and a sense of openness in your apartment. You do not need break or install anything before enjoying welcome mats and signs.
A pop of color
If you are fortunate, your rental apartment will be of a neutral palette. It is an opportunity for you to bring your mood and personality into it, by splashing it with a color of your choice – like the above apartment that has red decor accents, i.e., the candles, throw pillows, and canvas art.
Use removable wallpaper
A landlord may be understanding and allow you to paint the walls – in that case, do go ahead and use the color of your choice. If that is not the case, then removable wallpaper maybe the only way that will have a significant impact.
It’s the perfect way to get around the white walls that you are likely to find in your rental apartment.
I love how the wallpaper also serves as a boundary marker in the open plan apartment in the image.
Set your kitchen/dining table
If you plan to have a table in your apartment (a small table will suffice if space is a challenge), do give it a personality by setting it with affordable place-mats, runner sets and a centerpiece. I never thought of this during my renting days. It sure does turn the apartment into a home. Amazon has a selection of placemats and centerpieces that can fit any budget.
Soft color curtains
Soft colors work well for smaller spaces – which is likely the case for the rental apartment that we are decorating. Make a point to get a long length so that you can hang the curtains high up the ceiling. When hung like this, the curtains will create a feeling of a high ceiling, which in turn creates an illusion of a bigger space.
Maximize on storage
Modular furniture is your best friend and will make your rental apartment decorating much simpler. Space is always a challenge for first-time apartment dwellers, and modular furniture simplifies that by providing dual use.
The above Library Storage Set with Seat is a perfect example of modular furniture, and what one can do with it. Storage ottomans are also a prime example of how a piece of furniture can both decorate and be a storage item at the same time. Take advantage of these as they will come in handy.
Mirror, mirror, on the wall!

I love mirrors. Their reflection gives an impression that one is in a bigger space. If you go for sunburst mirrors or any other kind of decorative mirrors, you will surely give your rental apartment decoration your touch.
A wall gallery has a more personal touch than most wall decor approaches. It can be a mix of personal photos and inspiring messages that resonate with you.

When decorating your rental apartment – do consider your balcony as well. It is a space that could be an extension of your living room. Sturdy balcony furniture that fits your budget will help you create an outdoor relaxation space for yourself. It does not need to be fancy. Two sturdy chairs accompanied by nice throw pillows could deliver the serenity that you need.
That is it for today on rental apartment decorating. I’m looking forward to sharing more ideas to help make apartment living an enjoyable experience. Please pin the image below (or any image you love) to bookmark this post.
